Me too actually. I think I look a lot better in my glasses than not! Don't get any response from the ladies though, you lucky sod

Sorry for the thread derail but how do they test the eyesight of a 15 month old child? I've oft wondered that

It's a myth, wearing glasses doesn't make your eyes deteriorate, your eye sight is all down to how different parts of your eyes have grown and that the light is is not focusing in the correct place on the retina.
The lenses just reposition the light so it falls correctly and is nice and focused on the retina.

In fact not wearing your glasses (if you are long sighted) is more likely to cause your troubles, as the muscles are doing lots of work all the time to correct your distance vision.

They put drops in the eyes to make the pupils expand then it's done by measuring the back of the eye somehow, we saw two different specialists (in differing hospitals) and both came up with exactly same pescription so no reason to doubt them.

              CATARACTS?!
During the initial part of a sight test an optometrist will do a process called a refraction, they shine light into your eyes and though lenses and from the way the light behaves when they move the light/lens, they can very accurately measure your prescription.

After that they pop the prescription in front of your eyes and ask you questions ,chopping and changing between different powers of lenses to see what your brain prefers, as quite often you may not tolerate the actual prescription your eyes require to be corrected.

After that they make any further amendments to make sure that the eyes are balanced and can work well together with the different prescription in both eyes.

For a 15 month child, they do just the first bit . It's the same way they can get prescription Contact Lenses fitted for Dogs and Horses.

              EAR CATARACTS?!

That's interesting, I'd always assumed that it was the "what letters can you see etc" bit that was the actual eye test, how wrong I was!

Some places get a machine to do the the initial part , I think one of the more common machines has a little balloon that comes in and out of focus when you look at it.

Seems logical and was the understanding I originally had, Cheers! I've noticed since wearing glasses that I don't tend to get headaches anymore.

Superfamifreak - If you're anywhere near Manchester I get a discount in Optical Express if you decide to go ahead with it? Just lmk.

I've currently got glasses to help me see things far away, but my sight isn't at a stage where I need laser treatment.

Same here, I think they told me they were slightly stigmatized or something, but that they were slightly more rugby shaped than is normal, not sure if it has any bearing on whether you can get laser surgery or not.

If you are short sighted (myopic) and need glasses for distance vision your eye will be slightly more rugby ball shaped than someone with good eyesight. Your eyeballs will be longer front to back so the incoming light is focused further inside the eye than it should be hence objects in the distance looking out of focus.

Astigmatism is an irregular curve in your lens or cornea which can lead to blurred vision.

I think you can still have laser eye correction but it depends on just how bad your astigmatism is.

That's pretty much a spot on explanation. Usually when people are told they have a rugby call shaped eye it is because they are astigmatic which means that the cornea isn't spherical it is slightly longer on one axis. With the laser surgery they are reshaping the front surface of the eye so they can only correct it to a certain extent as the astigmatism isn't just caused by the front surface but also by the lens behind your pupil.
