Sonic and Knuckles - Sky Sanctuary

Has anyone seen Studio Ghibli's film Laputa: Castle in the Sky? Laputa, the flying castle is suspiciously like the Sky Sanctuary in Sonic and Knuckles. Even the destruction of the castle!

Except laputa came out in the 80's so im guessing sega mght have took inspiration from it.

I meant to say I think SEGA took from Laputa, not the other way around, sorry.

I've not played Sonic and Knuckles enough to recognise it, but I wouldn't be surprised. Studio Ghibli's artistic influence can be seen across dozens of Japanese videogames, most notably in Nintendo's Zelda series.
