Since I'm starting a wee collection of my own soon I was wondering where I should start? Apart from the obvious i.e mario, what other gems does the nes hold under it's wing?

I'd tend to recommend NES originals rather than conversions from superior systems so...
Kickle Cubicle! Highly addictive.
And Snake Rattle & Roll.
And RC Pro Am.
And possibly Solstice, although I find it very hard and a lot less accessible than its SNES sequel Equinox.
And Megaman 3
And Duck Hunt

A few other faves of mine -
Duck Tales - easy, but so much fun.
Ninja Gaiden - can get tricky, but extremely compelling.
Super Mario 3 - one of the finest games of all time.
Bionic Commando - great Capcom platform actioner.
Captain Skyhawk - addictive shooter.
Punch Out - superb, simple fun.
