    There can be only one:

    "Let's go, Mr. Driver"

    (on the ZX Spectrum +2A)

I think the first sampled speech I ever heard was Ghostbusters on the 48K.

I remember vividly when this came out. I was in the car with my Dad and the guy from the local game shop (PosiTron in Llanelli) was driving the other way. He swerved in front of us to make us pull an emergency stop then jumped out, breathlessly excited, to tell us about this sensational new game they just got in that could speak!! We drove to town and bought it straightaway. Minds were blown, on that day. (Tales of the Arabian Nights, C64)

I think that the Gauntlet speech is synthesised?

Yes! The Texas Instruments TMS5220C speech synthesis chip to be exact.

Last V8 on the C64. "Last V8. Return to base immediately!" (or something.)

Thread just sent me down a rabbit hole tracking this down - http://rk.nvg.ntnu.no/bbc/doc/Speech.html - my first memory of synthesised speech. Blew my mind completely

While all the Atari Star Wars games had memorable speech I always did love the speech to Return of the Jedi:

"Wonderful, we are now a part of the tribe"

                              "Here goes nothing"

"Lock onto the strongest power source, it should be the power generator"

Atari truly were the kings of synthesized speech.
