I think that Zero Punctuation actually hit the nail on the head for me as to why it gets ignored, the design is just too much, too over stylised. Still, if it is getting praise here I'd be more inclined to take a look.

actually i think the least problems the game has are design related. like i said, i loved it. it's far more consistent compared to Dark Souls, more western if you want. of course, if you don't like dark gothis fantasy with huge castle settings with underground catacombs then LotF isn't for you.
apart from that i say every DS fans owes it to himeself to at least check the game out. here's a nice (spoiler free) video that introduces the game and mechanics very well and also sums up the good and not so good points:
