You don't need to be friends to exchange Guild Cards.
To generate a Guild Card to post here, go to the Cargo Wharf, select Manage Guild Cards, select your own Card (golden colsed envelope icon), got the second page (Y button), select Generate QR Code.
The Guild's main portrait can be changed by selecting Register to card
Guild Cards are exchanged via Streetpass or by reading a QR Code (Cargo Wharf, Read QR Code).
The you can go here, and follow the instructions to get an hyper-fancy Guild Card instead of a simple QR code: http://eog.asylumst.com/guildcard.php
What are Guild Cards used for? First, each Guild Card is associated to a treasure present on the world map, that can be discovered by using the Dowsing Road, a skyship accessory. In the Guild Card managing page, the treasure map can be changed with those received.
Second, characters from other guilds can be used as guests in your party. Guests do not gain experience from battles, making levelling easier. There is a level cap to the characters that can be imported, which is lifted later in the game.
Exchanging characters is a good way to see different builds and party sinergies.
