Etrian Odyssey IV: Legends of the Titan [3DS]

Began playing this a couple of days ago and got a couple of questions.

I've just got to the orchard, killed the original little deer things but the big mum has come and I cant get anywhere near it. This is my first EO so I'm assuming you get along in this game with tons of buffing your characters and all that kind of stuff. At my current levels though (around 10), I have nothing substantial enough to turn the tide for myself.

Unfortunately my memory is more than hazy on the subject (ah, how long it has been!), so I cannot offer direct help, but if that FOE is from a quest taken at the bar and not something story related, you can skip it until you have a few more levels under your belt. IIRC purple deers are for characters between levels 10 and 15. I'll might pop the game in later to see if I can give you more precise inputs.
