    Panasonic ph10>phd8.

And in the bedroom Samsung C530 40" - cheapy but goodie.

PHD8, my favourite display, I sold my Kuro KRP-500M to go back to my PHD8 that I had kept as I preferred it.

I then bought the Sony 923 and sold the Panasonic and regretted it, and sold the Sony and bought another Pioneer, this time the 5090, which had a much cleaner image than my previous 500M.

But the PHD8 is hard to beat, clean as a whistle, sharp and oozing with detail. I have raved about them on the avforums for years, saying they beat the Pioneers in many ways, and told by certain 'resellers' that I am wrong.

I also have a C530 in the bedroom!

The PHD8 needs to be set to gamma 2.5 if you have not calibrated it, if you had that on 2.2 then I would stick the ST50 on 2.4 or 2.2 while you get used to it. After a few weeks up the gamma slightly.

You could however, still the set in gamma 2.4 and adjust the gamma curve at the 10ire range in the advanced menu, this will still give you nice solid mid range and bring out that detail you feel you are loosing in the lower parts. Worth trying.

That gave me a good morning laugh, thanks!
(Off topic, but I remember after the Kuros were discontinued, and some high end retailers suddenly changed their opinions and had a new-found love for the Panasonic Professional displays!)

    I know, amazing that!!

I got a phone call one night after I posted my initial thoughts on my 500M vs the PHD8, saying that "The Panny was sharper and far cleaner and once both were calibrated I could see how many would prefer the Panasonic commercials over the holy grail Pioneer".
The phone call sort of asked me to not post stuff about the dithering pixels and how soft the Pioneers can be because most people won't have both next to each other so all I was doing was putting people off buying the Pioneer.
I won't mention any names, but a poster who still posts on there a lot, who happens to now think the Panasonic VT50 is the best display ever!!

I remember Alistair at avsales showing me the margin they made on the 50PF11 vs the 500M, there was some difference!!
Put it like this, he managed to give me ?900 off the Pioneer and do it on 12 months interest free.

Actually Lyris, have you seen the new Samsung EH5300 LCD?
It is the LED backlit one rather than edge lit, looks a bit chunky but think it could be one to swap my C530 for as it has built in iplayer etc.
I just need a TV for the bedroom, don't want loads of boxes but really can't be doing with the uneven backlighting that you get from the edge lit displays.

I haven't seen the EH5300, but I did an in depth review (not publicly) of the EH5000 which should be 99% the same (I guess the 5300 is a cosmetic variant). Avoid. It used to be the case that the cheaper Samsung LCDs had the same SPVA panels in them, but the new ones have some cheaper panel variant which has a weird delta-like pixel structure (see bottom example http://cdn.avsforum.com/b/bc/525x525...ttach1355.jpeg ) and bad motion resolution. And a host of other colour clipping issues.

Maybe getting a "Smart" Blu-ray player or Roku (if those are in the UK yet) would be the solution there...

    Cheers for that.
I will probably just stick a Sky HD box back in there then, now they have all the catch up stuff on them and HD is not an extra ?10 a month probably worth it.

    Yeah the PHD8 was/is fantastic.

No overscan control, and blacks that are a little behind the times these days, but other than this it was a joy.

Let mine go for something crazy like ?120 last year, it had the rare single hdmi board too, i must have been mad.

Thinking of buying a 42st50 for general use and Xbox. I always kind of liked the feel of Plasma displays, but was always put off by image retention and the ghosting that could occur.

    How are those nowadays?

    I've currently got a C530
