Capcom has just announced that Darkstalkers Resurrection will be released as a PSN/XBL title available early next year.

SAN MATEO, Calif. - October 11, 2012 - Capcom, a leading worldwide developer and publisher of video games, today announced that the fan-favorite Darkstalkers® franchise is back and ready to take the fight to current gen consoles. Featuring a unique and colorful cast of characters, blended with fast-paced fighting action, Darkstalkers® Resurrection contains two games, Night Warriors: Darkstalkers Revenge and Darkstalkers 3, that will be available to download in early 2013 for $14.99 on PlayStation®Network and 1600 Microsoft Points on Xbox LIVE® Arcade for the Xbox® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft.

The two-for-one priced combo breathes new life into each game with a slew of features including robust GGPO-enabled online game play, HD graphical filtering with multiple viewing options, replay sharing, Spectator Mode, in-game achievements, Challenge/Tutorial Mode and an un-lockable vault filled with concept artwork, videos and more.

Players who want to face-off against their friends online are able to with GGPO-enabled online game play that helps create a virtually lag-free fighting game experience. Building upon the online system previously introduced in Street Fighter® III: Third Strike Online Edition and Marvel vs. Capcom® Origins, online game play now includes upgraded matchmaking with additional options such as region matching, ping lock and ping display.

While taking a break from competition, players have replay sharing and Challenge Mode at their disposal to help them hone their fighting game skills. Replays can be uploaded to the game's match server or directly to YouTube. The Challenge/Tutorial Mode contains trials to help players deepen their knowledge of the characters and their specific strategies. For those that prefer to learn from watching other people play, Spectator Mode and "Watch With Friends" allows players to watch games either live online or saved from previous matches. Players can discuss both live and saved games in real time.

Hmmm. Obviously the online component will be crucial here. So the system is 'robust' but is basically a tweak of the GGPO-based system introduced in SF III online and MvC? Great. That system is utter bollocks in SF III. Why they couldn't use the matchmaking system of SF/SSF IV I don't know. That works great.
Lol at the great new feature of ping display too. Yeah, who would have thought it's handy to see what the other person's ping is BEFORE starting the match.

Wow what a way to bury the series release a sub par Iron Galaxy port of just two of the games with the rubbish GGPO-based system. On top of that the Dreamcast, PS2 and PSP collections already out, feature all the games and plenty of extras to boot!!

I have zippo interest in this collection as it stands at the moment and really hope Capcom improve it to the quality of their previous Darkstalker collection releases.

Endo, GGPO was even worse for Marvel vs Capcom Origins couldn't even get a match.

Really wish Capcom would start getting their retro releases done by M2, who have been doing the best quality releases by far.

    It's Capcom's Kickstarter for Darkstalkers 4.
I like the idea of this Darkstalkers Ressurection. There are a lot of players who don't know these games, including me and it will be a good opportunity to discover them.

Probably more to do with nobody playing that game.

I'm not so sure why GGPO translated so poorly to consoles, the PC version used to be fairly good when it worked well, of 3s at least. They've completely removed 3s now that 3SO is out though. Rubbish.

Agree that the SSF4 matchmaking is probably the best matchmaking.

    What he said.

There's this video from New York's Comic Con from a few days ago suggesting an actual new game in the series:

    Don't mind the Americlaps.

Even with just what they have right now, I find this disappointing. As others have said, there have been other versions that seem to be more complete and, even then, there was more potential to improve them without having to actually create anything new - something like the PSP version, for example, which has all characters and play modes from all the games but could have also had all added backgrounds, music tracks and endings from the games too. There is still room for a Darkstalkers game a notch above what they have released so far and, from what I can tell, this isn't it.

Darkstalkers 3 is the best one, don't see any reason to have any other. Still lament selling my copy of Vampire Savior on the Saturn years ago.

Buy another copy, can get it for under a tenner now! I guess you need the RAM cart too though.

Kinda agree about only needing 3 also, being the "final" version.

Well the vanilla 3 was missing characters but that has since been rectified. But in rectifying it, they dropped the endings in most versions for some reason. They also usually use the less varied recolours of the backgrounds and, as it was, Darkstalkers 3 was pretty limited when it came to backgrounds. But the main negative for me with 3 is the lack of the usual round system. The Killer Instinct thing just isn't as good in my opinion.

Everything else about D3 is awesome though, which is why it was great they got all the characters for the PSP one and added the ability to go back to the earlier round system. But add proper endings (which all exist from the various D3 Japanese variations if I remember correctly) and throw in D2 backgrounds into the mix and that becomes a perfect package.

Not sure about the character selection in this version but I'm guessing D3 doesn't contain the mode switching of the PSP version, which rendered D2 fairly redundant.
