I can't believe nobody has mentioned this game. From the screen shots it looks complete turd in my opinion but see it running and all that negativity is washed away.
While Double Dragon Neon doesn't look all that fantastic it plays really well adding to the combo system of the original with more moves and fluid easy controls. The whole game has a fantastic 80's vibe to it due to the graphic art, cheesy pop and rock songs (as well as the classic DD music) and little nods to the age of neon. Throughout the game you collect mix tapes (remember making those?) which allow you to build up your strength or special ability. This gives the game a sort of light RPG feel but not enough to take away the classic beat'em up feel. One point I really love is the way you can revive a team mate. An audio cassette flies on to the screen and you have to spool the tape back in to it accompanied by the sound of an audio tape playing backwards, hahahaha.
The characters are all taken from the original double Dragon apart from the main boss guy who resembles a very popular skeleton bad guy from an 80's cartoon. Even the voice is there! This character is pretty funny due to his constant babbling and sarcastic phrases.
There are 10 levels it total with 3 difficulty settings and un-lockable bonus features. Honestly, this is a pure classic example of how an old 2D beat'em up should be remade. I see it as the never released Bare Knuckle 4 (Streets of Rage 4) it's that much fun.
