Updated.

I still need to buy the Death Anchor to try it out on Mute City. It's not really #1 on my wants list at the moment. At least when I do buy, it will give me a basis for the ideal settings.

Mayhem
26-07-2003, 05:49 PM
Seeing as I've bought it, here's the quick lowdown: it turns like nothing until you really get it up to speed. The first lap was a bit of an ordeal as you turn rather wide. Unless I need to fiddle with my sensitivity setup somehow. I am wondering just how the ghost can zoom ahead so fast so early on too...

Commander Marklar
26-07-2003, 08:22 PM
Is it not relying on acceleration over power/speed? A couple did this on the N64, had a much lower setting than I had anticipated. FZ-X cars used to have better handling through a slide, even if they didn't have the top speed nor retain the boost advantage over a faster car. You still win on technical ability rather than brute force.

Updated.

Very Hard story missions are indeed, very hard. GRRR!! :pft: :pft: :pft:

You can unlock the AX racers if you beat them though. Don't know about AX cup yet - but this game is HARD!!

Sorry about not updating the leaderboard - I don't have a PC at home.

Having probs with Diamond cup on Expert. I hope I don't have to complete everything on Master before I unlock more stuff. I'm getting tired of the difficulty now - it's giving me headaches.

Hopefully, I should have some decent times when I get back to time attack due to the amount of times I've raced against elite opposition on all the tracks. Port Town 2 and Lightning 2 were once my most hated tracks - they're now my two faves! LOL.

Oh yeah - Diamond Cup = BEST TRACKS EVER!! Fire Field 2 is a little too plain though. Cosmo Terminal = Best in-game tune + Best Track so far, IMHO.

Mayhem
27-07-2003, 06:07 PM
For Diamond Cup you should be looking to win Cosmo Terminal and Fire Field II, and come in the top 5 for Sand Ocean II and Aeropolis II. Then Phantom Road isn't such a pressure and you can probably come 15-20th and still win the Cup easily... well that's what happened to me ;)

So far I've got all of them on Expert and Ruby on Master...

I've come oh so close to winning Story #2 on VH to get an AX racer. Haven't looked into Story #1 on VH in depth (requires airbrakes to get all the pods) and only beat Story #3 on Normal so far.

Yeah - I started not giving a shit about coming 1st all the time from playing Sapphire on Expert. Instead, I started to concentrate on 'taking out' my rivals ensuring they end up with nil points giving me the easier lead. Gotta cheat to win these days.

Currently using either the Sonic Phantom or the Golden Fox for everything. I've bought all the cars and now looking to construct the greatest time trial craft ever - even if it does look slightly shoddy. :(

How do you save the ghosts??

It's on the menu which comes up after you finish the time trial race. It's in Katakana - I would tell which option but I'm not at home >_<
(maybe this is a good time to use NTSC-UK's Japanese guide man)

Mayhem

When you finish a time trial, I believe 7 options appear to choose from. In order I hope they are (memory time!)...

Repeat
Change setup
Change track/craft
View replay
Save replay
Save ghost
Quit

If you choose to save either replay or ghost, you then select which memory card to save onto. Click the top option in the box that comes up (SAVE) and it's done.

You can view the replays in the menu option on the main screen. You can use the ghosts by pressing Y when selecting a track to race on. If you've unlocked the staff ghost, select it and beat it during the race, you get 25 points (well I did for Vegas Palace I).

As for that track using Super Wolf-Z, there is a threshold speed where you will going flying off the track on the last hill of the lap regardless of how much you jam the stick forwards. The trick is to make sure you don't exceed it ;) Actually I think for the first lap I took a little leap and crashed a bit but stayed on target when I beat the ghost time for the first occasion. Sadly I wasn't racing it! I then had to go back and duplicate what I'd done against the sodding thing tch. Ended up with a better time (by a tenth of a second) but a far lower top speed because I'd made sure not to go flying again.

For the record, I do have the ghost (and possibly the replay, have to check) for the first time I beat the Staff time, so they are available whenever if people want to look I guess

Saving replays is probably the most helpful function I find - you can switch to 'in-game view' and then analyse your motions and correct mistakes in your head for your next attempt.

BTW: Beaten staff ghost records will be recorded in red - and custom craft used in blue, if you haven't already worked that one out. :hmm:

Mayhem: You may want to trim your Vegas Palace time down a bit, mate. I'm catching up! I'm currently at 0'56"868 with the Energy Sword-Z. I've coloured it in to look like a Zoom ice lolly too! :p

I couldn't believe my first lap - I completely flew off of the bottom curve at one end and glided all the way around it to the other side with a smooth as ice landing to boot. I don't think I'll ever get a better 1st lap - it's a wonder I didn't fly off.

If you could master that full turn glide for all three laps I reckon you could bring the total time down to around 53-54 seconds.

Well I can try... what's the specs for your vehicle btw David? Super Wolf-Z as you know is BAB...

Here are some more times... I have about 1'32" for Mute City II but forgot to write it down doh! The ghost for that course btw is around the 1'26" mark

Fire Field II - 2'14"348 - Fire Stingray

Cosmo Terminal - 3'10"617 - Super Wolf-Z

Now I'm interested (and will try out), just how the Sonic Phantom beat my machine considering I was boosting almost constantly for laps 2 and 3...

Sorry mate, can't quite remember. :s I will find out tonight.

Now I'm interested (and will try out), just how the Sonic Phantom beat my machine considering I was boosting almost constantly for laps 2 and 3...

Woo! Bring it on! You're best off paying for the staff ghost and then following it around with your fastest ship. I'm gonna create a custom racer just for this course. Remember, on the first lap follow the paths with the most boosts - then follow the pit-lanes on the 2nd and 3rd. It gets helluva tricky sticking to the twists though.

The staff ghost is within the 2min region with the Black Bull. Crazy stuff.

EDIT: I really should have a bash @ Mute City II - It's my most hated course though. :pft: :s :pft:

I haven't done well enough to UNLOCK the ghost on Cosmo Terminal yet AND I was doing all you suggested already. Madness... wonder where I'm losing the time then... best try with Black Bull and see what I can come up with there, or give my custom car an A rated body for even higher top speed...

As for Mute City II, here's the sickener part, the ghost was done using Silver Neilson wtf  That slidy piece of machinery? Definitely strangeness going on...

hmm. I don't understand the game at times either. I still can't work out the staff ghost routine on Mute City 1. Baffler.

As for Cosmo Terminal, just give it a whack with an A booster and see what you get. One of the lanes is a right dodgy bast though, I can't remember which one it is but I know it's near impossible to stick to it whilst boosting. It's a good job CT has a great tune to keep me occupied, I fell off about 10 times last night.

Just cut out the middle man and give it a try with the Sonic Phantom - easiest way.

I was surprised to find out how much of a difference 40kg makes to a craft when going for the Vegas Palace record. It might be an idea changing something as small as your cockpit.

Nice idea. How do I integrate that with the BBcode on here though?

I'd love to have a top 10 times for each course eventually, but that'd be too much work for something that's not really at all serious.

This time IS NOT going to be added to the leaderboard.

This is why I'm not turning the leaderboard into a website and making it public - we'll just end up with elitist glitch-riders coming along and spoiling the fun. I was part of an F-Zero X group back in '98 and we just took the piss out of the system and ended up not playing the game how it was intended. This is why I hate cheating in F-Zero so much.

BTW: I reckon I could bring that time down by another 10 seconds.

For now, lets just keep this time attack thread legit. We can make a seperate one for the Black Bull malarky when we've maxed out the current trend.

Now, can Saur, SG or anyone else help me with clearing my track records for Mute City? It's full of Black Bull-shit. I've done it before but I don't want to risk clearing ALL my records this time around. ;)

Jesus christ! How far are you off of beating the staff ghost mate?

Still a fair bit away. The Staff Ghost goes round in 2'15"297.

I can actually "beat" the ghost upto the last corner of Lap 1. I can see where i can improve though. I'm losing time on the drop-off and also on the last bend.

I'm trying to think of the courses I've maxed out as much as I can humanly acheive - probably Sand Ocean 2 and Cosmo Terminal. I'll give Mute City 3 a good bashing when I unlock it tonight too.

At the moment, I'm rinsing Mute City (Serial Gap) and my time is improving daily. I've managed to go from a time of 1'46"910 to 1'37"326.

It's one of those games that you discover something on the course that will shave seconds off your time - that and using your boost wisely IMO.

I always find that when I see my ghost overtake me I have to boost, even if I know it wont benefit me. Same happens in GP if I'm first and then someone overtakes me. I'll just have to restrain myself from now on and use em wisely i guess.
Also, how are people getting all these mad times with sonic phantom? I find him really hard to control let alone get decent times. Being new to F-zero (first in series ive played) I'm just starting to learn all the little tricks.

Honestly mate, just keep playing through the cups until you get better. That's all I can say really. It's a difficult game to teach someone without having them sit with you.

It is supposed to be a very difficult game - don't worry if you're crap! LOL. Playing the story mode helps you learn new things too - Even I learnt a new trick or two from stories #7, #8 + #9. I didn't think bomb-boosting was apparent in the 3D versions but it is! You must master the technique to complete #7. Hell, even the CPU uses it all the time on the master cups.

Hell - I'm stuck on v.hard mission 3 and you know what? it's pissing me off because I suck at it quite frankly - it took me a while to beat normal let alone hard. Now I'm on v.hard.

The strange thing about that one is that it took me a while to figure out how to beat Hard. And then once I did that, just upped the tempo even more and I beat Very Hard after only a few goes. Certainly nothing compared to how much time I spent trying to beat #2 and #5 on Very Hard now!

Your quote in another thread :

"I'm unsure about allowing these times over on the time attack thread becuase IMHO it really does spoil the game"

Agree with the above quote. It will just spoil the fun of competing in the Time Attack thread.

I actually spent 45 minutes or so trying out the technique on Mute City I. Best time of 59 seconds approx. Approx because i paused and quit the game on the last straight. Didn't want that time on my memory card. Tbh its not much fun recording times playing this way.

Right. Time Trial is now officially ****ed.

We cannot let glitches become the basis of our TT times, ala Fzero-X's Time Trial bullshit. The only way we can solve this "Snake" 'strat' rubbish is to either:

? Accept only photographic evidence, and ban cars with Grip: A, or
? Accept only video evidence.

Or only "Time Attack" Story mode, where you are forced to use the Blue Falcon.

I had high hopes for the Time Trial in this game, and now its been screwed. I wouldnt be surprised if this is the reason why the GX Internet Ranking page suddenly disappeared; I bet they found this bug too late, and realised just how crap it was.

Totally agree about the glitch. It shouldn't be used for this Time Attack thread. It would completely ruin the whole competition.

I think that everyone posting here would be honest enough to post real times and also not to use the glitch method.

Of course, if other peeps want proof of fast times thats fine. I'm sure sooner than later we will start to swap ghosts/replays, times can then be confirmed.

What do other people think?

There's some glitch in the driving of the Black Bull (via airbrakes or something) allowing for supersonic speeds to be achieved. If you watch the video, you'll understand. The guy does the first Mute City track in about 49 seconds... and I've heard someone's got up to 4000kph on that track...

Did you actually beat the Ghost in a 1-on-1 race? The game awards you 25 points if you beat the Ghost, but nothing if you just beat the Ghost time.

Same thing happened to me on Port Town I. I recorded a decent time, decided that was good enough to take on the Ghost, bought the Ghost and found out i was already running 0.7 secs quicker. Thankfully my skill didn't depart me and i beat the Ghost in a 1-on-1, improved my time as well.

Although, feel free to create a US version. It'll look dire compared to ours. ;) - It'd be nice to have a face-off between the topics though. 8)

In the immortal words of Brittney Spears...

"WHOOPS! I did it again!"

Damnit! Will I ever beat a staff ghost AFTER I purchase it? I keep having to participate in GPs in order to pay for more ghosts.

Cheers for letting me know anyway, mate.

I reckon I could improve VASTLY over that time - I still haven't mastered sliding around the 520 degree upward-spiral corner with my nose almost touching the inside rail. Oh well, I'll leave that for a while whilst I concentrate on Thunder Road - The course that has me stumped. I can beat the SG by 0'01"1?? on the first lap but I always lose it when I repeatedly boost around the course on either lap 2 or 3, I always clip the sodding rails on the thin straights. :( :pft:

I feel the same about Big Blue (Ordeal.) I spent about 2 hours last night trying to beat the Staff Ghost. When i finally edged the Ghost out (only .190 seconds) i was well pleased. Then i watched the CarCamera Replay this morning and i was amazed by how many mistakes i made (5 wall touches and 1 missed Boost) and also the number of turns i could have got much tighter on.

Just over a couple of seconds behind the Ghost.

I recorded this time early last night, and no matter how hard i tried to replicate or better it late last night and this morning i can't get within a second of it.

Anyone had any success trying to beat the Staff Ghost times when the Staff Ghost is Night Thunder (Silver Neelson)? I've bought the Staff Ghost for both Mute City (Serial Gaps) and Big Blue (Drift Highway), both of the ghosts are Night Thunder. Whatever i try i just can't seem to get within a couple of seconds of the Staff Ghost record on either of the courses. I've tried fiddling with the acc/top speed ratio, trying other craft including Night Thunder, etc.

UPDATED!

Will I ever learn?

I finally paid for the SG on Intersection last night to find that I'd already beaten it. Oh well, I played it just once more with the SG on this time and beat it, also beating my previous time - I then noticed that the SG time is displayed with a little star next to it when you load it up in future - much like the big red + yellow X you get from beating a SG on F-Zero X.

Thunder Road is going to take a few days more practice before I bag flying down those thin straights succesfully at 1900 kmph. :(

PH: I feel your pain. I'm having the same problems with the Fire Stingray on Thunder Road and Multiplex, and also with the Death Anchor on Twist Road and Mebious Ring. I can beat Thunder Rd on the first lap and I know what I'm doing wrong on laps 2 + 3, as for the rest, I can't even beat them on lap 1 - I don't have a clue what to do!

Commander Marklar
15-08-2003, 09:26 AM
Not if you push forward, plus, the craft is really heavy so it doesn't bounce around like Twin Norrita, for example. TN goes flying off, unless forward is pushed but Black Bull? No chance ;)

I reckon I could beat your time*. I missed a whole bunch of boost tiles, plus the settings were two notches off the top. If one is going to rely on the craft's boost, then the settings should be higher in my opinion. I just wanted to beat the ghost though, your time is safe for the time being :p

*edit: This was my third attempt - first go with TN, unlocked staff. Second go, set a 58"xxx time. Third go, beat staff with my time :)

I pretty much keep both airbrakes held down all the time (except on long straights.)

Most of the times i've set with it have been on easy flowing courses. Mute City I, Port Town I + II and Green Plant I. None of these courses have tight turns. I tried beating my Aeropolis I time with it, no joy, the ship can't get around the hairpin tightly enough and also the quick left/right just after the first Boost Recharger.

Vegas Palace (the first one) is all about the start, and just going like a bat out of hell as quickly as you can, constantly boosting. Apart from the hill at the end where you can and will fly off ;)

I only saved the ghost for my record on there, but I can try again and do a recording of something very close presumably 8)

Guys - do any of you have videos of your time attacks? On the tracks I like I am only like 1-3 seconds behind you lot, but on some of them I am up to 15 seconds behind you. How do you do it? Namely Aeropolis (first one on first cup) and Vegas Palace (first one too). Short cuts?

I'm saving all my ghosts that I'll eventually send out to peeps on a mc59. I have some catching up to do yet however. My only prized replay so far is the one of Lateral Shift - I'm sure I'll crush it with a custom craft when I get back to TT.

I think we're quite some time off of a legendary ghost save as it's still a new game.

I've got 5 or 6 of my better Ghosts saved onto a memory card. No videos though.

I've only got one really fast save (the others are just beating the SG by a second or so and can be greatly improved with practice.)

Quick go on Port Town I this morning. Improved my time a little. That really is it now, defitnely taking a break for at least a week. ;)

Couldn't resist a quick go before work this morning. :p

Port Town (Aero Dive) - 2'17"606 - Blast Jaguar-Z - PH

Changed the Blast Wolf-Z to the Blast Jaguar-Z. Only difference is a slightly heavier Body. Increased Top Speed, but an absolute pig to turn. The above time was recorded despite thumping into the wall around the tightest turn.

The ghost for Mute City AX is done with Fat Shark, so I would like, at some point, to try it out. Which story do you get it from?

Looks like I'm gonna have to fend off Split Oval challengers with an even more suicidal run on the track ;)

I completely flew off on the first lap but pulled it back and flew through some track-side scenery to land just on the finish line. Only did it on the first lap because it is quite hard to pull back whilst boosting - I've never quite managed it yet if it is possible.

The Fat Shark is unlocked after Story #4 - Don Genie is da' PIMP d4ddy!! - his theme rocks too.

Here's the list so far...

#1 = Rainbow Phoenix
#2 = Spark Moon
#3 = Rolling Turtle
#4 = Fat Shark
#5 = Cosmic Dolphin
#6 = Silver Rat
#7 = ???
#8 = ???
#9 = Taxi thingie-ma-jig (???)
All Hard Complete = Magic Seagull

As for that Lateral Shift time - It can be beaten by a mile, I'm just a pussy when it comes to 2,500kmph 'air-grabs' on the 90degree corners. :hmm:

Best off practicing with the Sonic Phantom first by following the SG. Even though I didn't I played for around 5 hours before learning myself the 'air-grabbing' trick. If I'd have bought the SG first it would have cut a whole lot of swearing out. LOL. Seriously though, it was like learning the course from scratch using the Moon Wolf-Z as it's weight shifts so tremendously compared to the feather-weight SP.

As for the Blast Wolf-Z - I just can't be arsed learning the course a third time, not until I take a break and play some other tracks.

I usually never finish - I'm usually lucky to score 1 success out of say 30 attempts. It just gets so quick that those air-grabs get silly and you just miss them totally because you don't have the reflexes of a robot or something else super-human. It's all about taking gambles when you go so fast.

Plus - you can fly off the outside facing corner if you go too fast with no hope of pulling back in like you can on 'Split Oval'.

As for your Aero Dive time PH, I think that's a ghost I require - There's no way I'm beating it until I see how it's done. I tried last night and it was a big waste of 20 minutes - I couldn't even beat the SG, he just boosts off at the start and then that's that. I may try again tonight with the Fat Shark as he easily pisses all over everything laid out by the Black Bull.

LMAO! You will indeed matey! As I'll be on there for another good 2 hours tonight!!

My method is simply to save the Boosts for the big hill and drop-off combo.

Lap 1 - Take as normal.
Lap 2 - Hit the first Yellow Boost Pad. Then use 1 Boost on the rest of the straight. Do not use another Boost until you approach the steep hill. Then continously Boost up the hill and keep Boosting while you are in the air. Leave one Boost in the tank - otherwise you will never get around the tight corner at the bottom (not if you are using a heavy craft anyway.) Use last Boost and repeat for Lap 3.

Cheers for that mate - how do you take the last straight though? Do you power-up to full whilst boosting ONCE or do you 'shimmy-shimmy' the boost-pads with re-filling?

Power-up to full whilst boosting once.

I tried the 'shimmy-shimmy' about a week ago and my times weren't as good. Probably improved my technique since then, so can't be sure if it wouldn't improve the time even more. Will give it a go this Evening.

I've been thinking about it here at work - first thing I'm going to do is try and hit the first pad adjacent to the start of the pit and then lean left without losing too much acceleration. Prob curve right after the boost pad at the bottom of the ramp and then left into the second pad at the top therefore already facing the pit-lane.

Better get home now before I start getting tired. :)

I think I need Fat Shark to explore how it handles on certain tracks. I seem to be going for the "perfection of racing very, very fast" at the moment :p

Mute City (sonic oval) - 48"243 - Jewel Bruiser-V2

Still a second behind the ghost... I can keep up with it on the first lap and then it just zooms off into the distance.

On the other hand, it's demolition time on one ghost 8)

Cosmo Terminal - 2'55"677 - Jewel Bruiser-V2

Was a second behind after the first lap, then just raped it over the next two, it just couldn't keep up with the sickness in speed...

UPDATED! - nice times you two. 8)

Unfortunately I couldn't seem to pull off the flying trick at all last night on Split Oval. I packed in trying after half an hour. :pft: You know it's a bad call when you can't even keep up with your own 3 ghosts after the first series of boosts - god knows what I was doing when they were recorded.

I then gave Lateral Shift an hours worth of bashing - I didn't finish once! This track is pure suicide if you push it too much.

Tonight I'm returning to Thunder Road, then I'm going to try some of the other tracks that I haven't bothered with previously such as Phantom Road and Double Branches. I might try improving my Intersection time also.

Story mode missions #7, #8 and #9 are impossible on v.hard. Has anyone else attempted these yet? I'd say the easiest out of the three is #9 - After an hour of beating the ghost only half way around lap 1 I resorted to the 'snake' technique and got a little further on my first attempt - you have to be bloody careful not to fly off the sides though. :s

I can keep up with the ghost - are you taking the undulations of the track into account and controlling accordingly (e.g. up/down)?
