The Knight Rider returns! (http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/cult/a76641/knight-rider-set-for-television-comeback.html)
Cult 1980s show Knight Rider will return to the small screen with a two-hour pilot for NBC, according to reports.
Variety states that Swingers and The Bourne Identity director Doug Liman has been approached by NBC to produce a new resurrection of the drama, which previously starred David Hasselhoff as former cop Michael Knight alongside an artificially intelligent talking car called K.I.T.T.
The move to bring back the much-loved series, which originally ran between 1982 and 1986, is said to have been inspired by the big screen success of the Transformers movie this summer. It is believed that similar special effects, albeit on a smaller scale, will be used to render shapeshifting cars in the pilot.
It is currently unknown whether Hasselhoff has been approached to reprise his role as the lone crusader for justice.
If the Hoffmeister doesn't play Michael Knight....who could?! :hmm:

Has to be The Hoff, just wouldn't be the same otherwise.

Shapeshifting cars!??! I don't remember them in the original Knight Rider :(
Surely it HAS to be the Hoff though! It HAS to be...

I dont get this 'ironic' Hoff worship. The mans a plank and always has been. Knight rider is shit and so has everything else hes ever done. Hes made a career out of being shit.

It's the whole cheesy-ness he brings to things that makes him so enjoyable. Ok so I can do without his "singing" but even when he performed one of his tracks on America's Got Talent (on which he was a judge) it was still so cheesy that it was enjoyable to watch. I honestly don't think that Knight Rider would be the same without him.

That may well be true, but it's hardly a crime is it?
Let's face it - He's not the first in Hollywood to have made a career out of being shite, and he's certainly not going to be the last, is he?

It's not like he chose to make a career out of being shite - hats off to the guy he's done OK and I'd be happy to see him back behind the wheel of KITT.
Shapeshifting cars though ? ffs.

Just as important as Hasselhoff behind the wheel is KITT... will Mr Feeney reprise the role as KITT? That is just as much of a deal breaker for me.

Shapeshifting cars are not new to Knight Rider. Am I the only person who remembers Team Knight Rider? It had motorbikes that joined together as a weird and pointless car thing.

TBH, I personally feel that the likes of Knight Rider (and Airwolf & Street Hawk, for that matter) are just best left where they belong - back in the 1980's.
The world really has moved on.

Yeah but you know they'll make it dark and gritty. Like every other show on tv.
I think it might just be referring to when KITT transformed into "Pursuit Mode".

David Hasselhoff MUST be in this. I don't care about all this postmodern 'Hoff' bullshish, it means nothing to me, but as long as the man drunkenly pisses his kecks with KITT on autopilot twice per episode, I'll be happy.

Wouldn't necessarily make it any better, imho. In fact, it would more than likely detract from the original. And in any case, the concept of a talking car used to fight crime is just plain outdated now.
It's a no-win situation. Ergo, it's best left alone.
Also, they MUST keep the theme tune!

Also, they MUST keep the theme tune!
The same version? Or could we get an updated theme by the Chemical Brothers using the same tune :D
Urgh! A Chemical Brothers version would just have the first 4 seconds of the original married to a thump-thump beat.
No, I'd suggest an update by more accomplished/less overrated producers...

This is best left in the past. I despise the 'ironic' love of all that 80s rubbish like Knight Rider and The A Team; the shows are just bad, plain and simple, and are incredibly dull to watch now. I mean come on, a talking car that fights crime? What is this, Cartoon Network? Television drama has, thank god, moved on.
80s nostalgia is inescapable, and I hate it. It's okay when it's stuff that was actually good, but junk like Knight Rider? Come on, every episode was exactly the same and Hasselhoff (no matter how 'cult' or 'ironic' it may now be to think he's cool) was hammier than a pork farm.

While I definitely agree about Knight Rider being left in the past, it's a bit harsh (and a pretty cheap shot, tbh) to use the hindsight of two decades passing by to call them dreadful.
What should be remembered is that (obviously) these programmes were around in the early-mid 1980's, which (again, obviously) would have made them fresh and exciting concepts for their time.
Secondly (and perhaps most importantly), both The A-Team & Knight Rider were huge ratings winners for the US television network NBC at a time when they were seriously lagging behind their main rivals ABC and CBS. Additionally, these programmes also achieved considerable international success during this period as well, which is no mean feat considering that these days you have countless dramas and sitcoms that are lucky to get past their pilot episodes without being axed, never mind being picked up by a network for a series'/season's worth of episodes.

Knight Rider is good, and Hasselhoff wasn't bad at all in it.
I can understand why some people don't like it, but no one should call it sh*t, because it's not bad.
This new version will have a b-list celeb, or maybe a newcomer. I think the whole style and tone will be different.
Maybe it would have been better if the producers had gone with a different name for the show.
I don't like this trend of taking old popular shows and films and making new versions. Why not make totally new creations?
Dogg Thang
06-10-2007, 10:51 AM
Yep, I agree Leon. I'd rather see something new. But you're right about the tone. It's not like it's going to be the same. Look at Battlestar Galactica. Or Bionic Woman. They didn't keep the tone. Not even close.
Doesn't mean it will be any good. But it's pointless making a call based on any aspect of the original other than the talking car.

Yeah.... I'd be surprised if it's remotely like the 80s version.
Times change, so the tone and style of Knight Rider are going to be a lot different.
All that really counts is if it's good, I hope it is. :)

I've never liked Knight Rider that much, and "the Hoff" as all the new generation call him was always a crap actor, wooden and boring.
The A-Team was just miles better, George Peppard was a quality actor. The banter between Mr T and Murdock was what made the show, each character had his own personality, something I very much doubt they can re-create to the same success.

Knight Rider 2000 (killing Devon Miles off was a bad idea)

To be honest I only saw 1 episode of TKR and didn't really feel like watching it again. Hoff is only famous these days because of the whole singing at the demolition of the Berlin Wall (hence the cameo in Dodgeball). They should just leave it to rest in peace.

I hate updates of shows that were terrible to begin with, and this looks abysmal. Why is KITT now a shitty muscle car type thing instead of a sleek sports car anyway? Lame.
Knight Rider 2000 looks pretty entertaining though, having read the wiki page; made in 1991 and set in 2000, featuring futuristic stun guns and cryogenic freezing prisons - the filmmakers were evidently optimistic futurists!

Peppard was great in The A-Team, his jealousy of Mr T's fame is a bit sad. B.A and Murdock's personality clash totally made the show for me.
I wish they'd leave these old shows alone, yeah they weren't highbrow entertainment but they captured so many young imaginations (at the time) it's sad to see them piss all over those memories.
Mainly because the remakes always suck.

Well having seen the new show I can say that I was entertained. It perfectly succeeds in trying to be an 80's show today. Now I'm not saying its as good as the Battlestar Gallactica re-imagining but its nowhere near as bad as the new Bionic Woman.
Lets look at the new KITT. I was expecting Val Kilmer to be awful, and he wasn't. In fact he was perfect. Very dry wit. The car itself I really wanted to hate. After all a Ford Mustang!! But I didn't. Seemed to be "right" and well explained. The only thing I wasn't keen on was the nanotechnology building the spoilers. And that when the computers were turned off Kitt was no longer bullet proof. Still added an element of peril to the story. So I forgive it this once. As long as its not a plot device turned to often.
They also kind of introduced an over arcing story.
Ok the acting wasn't great, There wasn't any KITT turbo boosts. But over all I liked it in a throwaway kind of way. And isnt that how Knight Rider always was enjoyed?

I thought it was decent enough and perfectly watchable. I didnt like the nano technology stuff too much either, especially the bit towards the end with the van. That seemed a bit ridiculous. But it was watchable and i could envisage a half decent series being made based on this pilot.
I liked the car as well, and Val Kilmer sounded ok. I would like some more majorly impressive set pieces for the car though if a series does get the go-ahead, as lets face it, its all about KITT.
Oh yeah, David Hasselhoff guest appearance. They could have had a bit more fun with that i thought without being cheesy, but then i guess that wouldnt have really fitted the storyline they had set up, so playing it completely straight was the only way. Nice nod to the orginal series though and how it all began.

Lucky KITT has all those computers - otherwise, how would he turn corners, what with being a Mustang? I'm sorry, Michael, but my turbo boost systems only function correctly in the fast lane of Interstate 95." ;)

TV show started a few days ago and its not great
Kitt is nice and a novel idea where it can change into a chav mobile and into a truck
Kitt's voice sucks, Val Kilmer isnt a good idea
Loads of nice looking ladies and KITT still has a turbo boost
Intro music made me feel happy and young again until it went into a techno rock version and just ruined it from there
all i need now is TV giants in America to ruin Street Hawk and it will be complete

still watching this even though i'm a little behind, episode 12 was alright and another 4 to watch
KARR made an appearance and the effects were a little below par - it was well made
he now transforms into a robot from the Mustang (with a yellow light)
what was a nice touch however was using Peter Cullen as KARR's voice (Optimus Prime)
still nowhere near the original, but it passes 41 minutes i guess

Yes I'm still watching this too. Its alright in a throwaway kind of way. The show has just sort of had a mini makeover, which saw a lot of the characters axed. Good for the shows budget, however it has made the stories weaker if anything. Still early for this re reboot. And I'm still watching!
Loved the episode where a vital part of KITT was hidden as part of an Xbox game and Billy had to go and collect it.
