Oh and be sure to check out the animated exposé preview (http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/expose/) at Apple.com to see how this works!
Please, no flaming in this thread, no system wars... keep it civil, happy. :)

I love apple software.
I'm so thrilled that iTunes is on PC now.
I hear Intel are in talks with apple to get OSX running on X86 CPUs.
Could be interesting.......

Don't forget to click the image twice, so the pictures are displayed at 100% of their size. They look horrible otherwise. :)

Every Mac is sold with a syringe that goes in your wallet and every five minutes, they remotely suck an absurd amount of money out of it for not very much in return.
If they were cheaper, I'd love one. Honestly. But not at that price. Surely if they cut their prices, they'd see far more people going Mac?

Just curious, how much is Apple charging for an 10.x -> panther upgrade and to buy it new?
kuran

20$ for the upgrade, 120$ for new.

20$ for the upgrade, 120$ for new.
surely the $20 is only if you recently bought your computer, or 10.2
it does look nice, but theres no way i will bother upgrading unless there are applications i really really really need.
10.2.8 is fine for me.

I heard that it's waaaaaaaaaaaay faster than 10.2.
But, I'm macless, so I wouldn't be able to tell you.

I know what I'm talking about, just scrape the money together and upgrade.

My pre-order landed on my doorstep Friday and as I was away for the weekend I didn't get around to installing it until Monday night. Everything is running smoother and responding quicker in Panther than it was in Jaguar. It's the equivalent of the jump from Cheetah to Jaguar.
They've done a massive amount of work on the base packages and the thing now runs with a significant spring in it's step. If you meet my idea of the minimum specs (512MB of RAM and a 32MB GPU) you'll find that OS X now behaves like it spent the past 14 months in the gym bulking up.
Having upgraded from 10.2.8 myself I can honestly say that 10.3 makes Jaguar look sluggish. The amount of changes under the hood which you'll never see is astounding, but all of your well written apps will behave better for them.

Use Panther on the G5 and then step down to a Jaguar running iBook.
I give it less than a week before you pop in CD One and double click on the Hard Disk icon to upgrade to Panther. :D
It's RAM hungry though so 512MB should be the minimum you run with.

Heh, you're probably right...
But then I would've thought that everything will seem shit once I get my G5.
I should have my 64bit beast soon enough...

That's an opinion not a fact, and it's so devoid of substance that it could be mistaken for trolling.

Which is something both Gateway, HP, Sony & Toshiba have proven to be wrong. None of them are making a penny out of the computer business right now and all of them have been slashing prices like the world is ending. By price cutting logic all of them should be doing a roaring trade, when in reality both Sony and Toshiba's sales have dropped by 24 & 22% of the notebook market respectively while Apple's sales have risen and they have gained another 2 percentage points in the notebook market in Q2 putting them in fifth place and within striking distance of IBM who are in forth place.
The Powerbook G5 due in the latter half of 04 could be enough to blow IBM out of the water and hand Apple the fourth spot on the starting grid.
As for desktops while everyone except DELL has dropped close to 15% sell through on average, Apple's sell were up and their total market share rose by 1 percentage point before they shipped even one G5 system to a customer. I expect that number to be greater when we see the numbers for the quarter just gone where G5's were moving in volume into the retail channel.
The Mac price cutting logic is what I call "Courseynomics" (So named for ZDNet's Mac price cutting advocate and all around clueless IT windbag David Coursey) and for some reason boosters of Courseynomics think that it makes sense that a hardware company should cut it's prices on it's main source of revenue in order to bring it to a level where they are directly in DELL's cross hairs, and would be lucky to break even on every system they ship never mind post a profit.
The fact remains that if people want a cheap PC they can buy a cheap PC, if they want a Mac then they'll buy a Mac. Cheaper Mac's are a pipe dream from the same people that brought you the horror of OS X on x86, a brain damaged idea which would probably kill Apple rather than help it since the bulk of their profits comes not from selling their OS but from selling their hardware.
There was a time when there were cheaper Mac's, it was the age of the cloners and not only didn't the cheap clones increase Apples market share but they damaged the companys bottom line so badly that one of the first thing Steve Jobs did when he got in the door of the CEO's office was kill the entire Mac clone market.

They've dropped the prices of the emac just last week so it's the cheapest desktop Mac you could buy new. (£649 & £849 for the two base configs, you'll need more RAM though but you might get that cheaper through a third party. I recommend a minimum of 512MB)
http://www.apple.com/uk/emac
If you're looking for something second hand you'd be better off picking up a couple of Mac specific magazines at your newsagents and going through the ad's, every now and then someone is dumping aged stock and you can get something nifty on the cheap.

I Upgraded to Panther late last night from 10.2.8.
I’m running a G3 600MHz, 40 gig HD and 1GB of ram
Things are quicker. I must admit to being a bit sceptical but it really does seem quick. The biggest improvement I’ve noticed so far is Mail. The retrieval of mail is quicker and basic start-up. As I didn’t finish the upgrade till 00:30 I didn’t have a lot of time to play. I seemed to have problems connecting to the net via my router. I reset it and things seemed ok but this morning when I switched on again I wasn’t getting a connection so another reset was needed?!?. I tried fast user switching (I think this is great!) Expose is very nice and handy and the new finder is like Tiara Henry on speed.
No problems with my upgrade. I optimized my drive with drive 10 (it was in a bad way) backed up my user files to my IPod :D , then off i went. It took so long (90 mins) because of the additional languages which i imediatley got rid of with Delocalizer. Top program, saved me 794mb hd space.
I'll have more of a play later on, but so far so good.

to right. I'm not a PC basher (got one as well) but anything to do with photo or video editing, a Mac of some sort is the No1 choice in my opinion.
Just plug in you camera and IPhoto starts up, no searching for drivers etc.
IMovie is a great free utility, easy and again no compatibilty problems. Can't you take it back. The new IBooks are out  But for serious use maybe wait until the G5 powerbooks come out. Vroom...

I'm a long time computer user and I have to say that if you can afford them macs are probably the best computers available. I'm not a mac loved or and MS hater either!
Their *is* the lack of games arguement but I don't mind too much as I have a PC aswell and there's the lack of apps arguement but even ignoring ported unix stuff there's still practically everything one needs.
I bought my ibook 6 months ago and I love it. My G5 will be delivered so very soon and I can't wait.

It's pretty old so I guess a few hundred quid.
Take a look at what a similar machine go for on ebay and knock maybe 10- 20% off that.
