    Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn [PS3]

Developed by From Software, Gundam UC is a retelling of the first three anime episodes seen from the cockpit of various Mobile Suits from all factions.
After a quick tutorial on basic controls, the Story Mode kicks off with a couple of mission with the Kshatriya before unlocking some more tutorials and a about half a ton of cutscenes.
Tutorials cover all aspect of Mobile Suit piloting, from basic maneuvering, additional weapons, the cover system (that up till I've played hasn't been put to use) and different control methods for transforming Mobile Suits.
I don't have any experience with Armored Core or the ACE games, so the control scheme is a bit overwhelming at first, especially when handling Mobile Suits like the ReZEL and the Loto that feature completely different ways to pilot them; the game offers a simplified control scheme but IMO it also limits what it's possible to perform.
Story mode offers several "timelines" seen from the eyes of a particular character, like Barnager, Marida Cruz, Riddhe Marcenas or even non-pilots like Minerva Zabi, though such characters don't offer playable missions and only cutscenes.
Missions are offered in a semi-linear way: normally there are two or three active missions about different characters that must be all cleared before unlocking the next batch. Unfortunately each set of missions come with a large number of mandatory cutscenes that must be seen at least once before being able to play the actual mission.
Right now I've played up what should be episode 2, piloting the Kshatriya, the ReZEL and the Unicorn; the Kshatriya so far has seen the most varied mission types, with one-on-one duels, skirmishes and infiltration against mixed groups of Lotos and Jegans; the ReZEL is the only Mobile Suit that has been engaged in a defense operation (against the Sinanju and waves of Geara Zulus); the Unicorn so far has seen only one-on-one duels and due to how powerful this Mobile Suit is, its missions have been largely uninteresting.

However the best part of the game lays within the Custom Cast, Lab and Tune modes.
Each completed mission awards points, which can be spent in Tune mode to upgrade Mobile Suits, pilots and weapons or to buy several items in the Lab.
Bought items are then used in Custom Cast to face a set of missions with a limited amount of personnel and equipment.
To play Custom Cast a warship, her captain and at least one pilot and one Mobile Suit are needed; should the Mobile Suit not feature a fixed main weapon (like the long-range cannon of the Geara Doga Heavy Arms), a weapon is required as well.
The most common mission in Custom Cast is an attrition skirmish, where you need to destroy a certain amount of enemy MSs or warships to complete the mission; special enemies can enter the fray after fullfilling this objective or when excessive damage has been dealt to the enemy. Other missions include escort missions or simple defense of your warship.
Between missions the warship and the Mobile Suits regain health based on the warship crew's abilities and it's possible to swap Mobile Suits between active and reserves in case one is badly damaged; once a Mobile Suit is destroyed, it's out of commission for the rest of the scenario. During missions your wingmen will alert if they are too damaged and it's possible to "heal" them by touching their MS.
Of course the best part is that your team is fully customizable: you can pick among all purchased items and you're free to mix between Zeon and Federation assets, so that a Delta Gundam will launch from a Musai armed with a Beam Machine Gun and Full Frontal in the cockpit. It's pure fan service, but it's the best mode the game offers, from the mission structure to how the team is managed: it's highly addictive and it easily could stand alone; unfortunately the best equipment is unlock via story mode and it's also expensive, so you need every way to rack up points.

There's a gallery mode which is pure Mobile Suit porn and the options allow to customize the BGMs throughout the game; it's also possible to costumize the control scheme button by button.

First impressions are thoroughly positive, will post later for more.

Nice write up briareos_kerensky, im seriously thinking of heading to amiami to order it, only off putting is the controls which you described and i've read elsewhere are pretty confusing.

Just completed story mode (that BTW is called Unicorn Mode) with Barnager, Riddhe and Marida; finally got story missions with the Sinanju, though they start from what would be episode 2 of the anime; missions set earlier than the Gundam UC anime and all missions starring Angelo are paid DLC, which is kinda disappointing.
While playing battles from different point of views might be entertaining, duels tend to be an unnecessary repetition: there are multiple instances where the Unicorn fights one or two enemy Mobile Suits (like the Sinanju or Angelo's Geara Zulu) with a supporting Mobile Suit (normally Riddhe in the ReZEL or the Delta Plus) and the supporting character then plays the same mission against the same enemies with the same objective; luckily Sinanju missions have a more varied structure; for example its first mission is about destroying the Nahel Argama's cannons in an asteroid field; the objective itself is somewhat different than pure destruction and the environment could provide some more variety thanks to the cover system. Could is the key word as there's really no incentive to use asteroids as cover.
I really hope the cover system has an actual meaning in this game, probably in Custom Cast mode, and it's not there because it will be used for the next Gundam Unicorn game (and there will be, since this one covers only half of the series).
Unfortunately there's no sign that ECOAS missions are part of the story mode, and this makes me wonder why going the extra lenght of having the Loto in tank mode; the Loto itself can be featured in at least two missions (Kshatriya infiltration and assault on Palau) and I strongly doubt there will be "land" segments in Custom Cast. Having the Loto in story mode would have also give the cover system an actual use, as the Mobile Suit is very small and fragile.

On the other hand Custom Cast is getting better and better and it's much more challenging than story mode; the challenge is not only about completing missions but also completing them with the best rank possible to proceed through the most difficult (and point rewarding) missions.
Currently my team is composed by two close-range Geara Dogas and my Geara Doga Heavy Arms, that sits outside the battle raining large-caliber bullets on everything approaching. It has no close defenses and I'm forced to use the boost to move almost anywhere, but I like its firepower. Unfortunately firepower isn't the answer to all missions and it's kinda hard to hit Mobile Suits with such a slow gun.
It's nice to see that From put a lot of effort giving each weapon a personality, even when comparing two Beam Rifles.
Largely ununsed in story mode, transforming Mobile Suits are extremely useful in Custom Cast though shifting between two completely different piloting modes is not exactly easy, so it's MA mode for quick transitions with the battleflied and MS mode to dish out the damage.

The hunch that Gundam UC could have stood on its own without the story mode (or a story mode that just doesn't follow what happened in the anime) has been confirmed.

The game does feature extensive menus in Japanese, but it's very easy to understand what you are going to do except for the option menu; loading times are terrible especially when booting the game for the first time and there is no install option...now that PS3s are offered with large HDDs (and changing a PS3 HDD is the epitome of easy), this is a rather puzzling choice.

I guess I can spend a couple of words on the control scheme and how arming a Mobile Suit in Custom Cast works.

IN MS mode the left analog stick is used to move the MS on the horizontal plane; R1 and R2 are used to ascend and descend respectively; doubletapping is used for a short vertical dash in the chosen direction.
The right analog stick is used for camera control and R3 is used to center the camera.
X is used to turn thrusters on (higher speed but higher fuel consumption) and doubletapping X plus the analog stick is for horizontal dashes.
Circle is used for targeting enemies: a simple press targets an enemy and subsequent presses circle between targets; holding down circle releases the targeting reticle; once locked onto a target the camera is slaved between your MS and the enemy. Sometimes it's kinda hard to have the target reticle lock onto what you want and more often than not the reticle would lock targets right behind you, which is quite problematic. Left and right on the d-pad are used to circle between subsystems when targeting warships.
When unlocked and near supplies (replenish health, fuel and ammo) left and right lock onto supplying points, but it might be nightmare touching them as most of them are parts of MS left on the battlefield; when supplies are warships (either active or destroyed hulls), touching them is much easier.
Square and triangle are used for the main ranged weapon and for the close range weapon. Pushing triangle when away from the target will make the MS boost toward it; lenght of the boost is based on the MS and if thrusters are on. Pressing triangle when engage in close combat will combo up to three times.
Firing the main weapon is self expliantory...but: up and down are used to select firing mode; for example beam rifle have a single shot or a continuous beam; certain beam machineguns alternate between beam and the undeslung grenade launcher.
Pressing L1 will shift all face buttons to secondary weapons, that might have different firing modes as well. Secondary weapons include but are not limited to grenade launchers, funnel, different type of charge or semi-homing beam weapon and various missile types.
L2 is used to raised the shield.

When in Custom Cast, the MS chosen usually determines the kind of secondary weapons, while primary weapons can be freely swapped between anything available. Some Mobile Suits (Dra-C, long-range Geara Doga and Zulu) have a fixed primary weapon and it this case their loadout can't be modified.

L3 is used to transform between MS and Mobile Armour if possible (ReZEL, Gaza-D, Delta Gundam family). Here the left analog stick is used for pitch and roll, R1 and L1 for yaw, R2 and L2 for boost and brakes respectively; up and down are inverted as on an airplane but it's possible to change this setting and it's also possible to se a simplified control scheme where the left analog stick is for pitch and yaw.
The Loto is the only MS that can transform into a tank, and here R2 is used to advance...but I'll have to play its tutorial again because I can't really remember its other controls.

I hate both of you! I don't have the budget I need for both of those games.

Yet they are two completely different games. I've tried GEV in Japan two years ago and it was a bit too arcadey, but so far I've enjoyed Zeonic Front more than any other Gundam game.
Armored Core has always been on my radar due to the mecha design, but only played AC Last Raven on the PS2 and the learning curve was too steep, so I let it go. Maybe when it's cheaper.

DLC missions. Grey folders with DLC written underneath must be bought first. I always played with my US account, I think the game hangs because is searching for the Japanese store.
